Any café that has me in to review it will be in for a rough ride. Why? Because I’m a self-confessed coffee addict who spends most of her free time hitting up coffee shops to study and hang out. For me, a ‘good day out’ is unearthing a new, cool, quirky coffee shop that has yet to be discovered by the masses, where I can relax in peace.
U-cafe is a small place connected to UX Education English School on the edge of Gaoxin. Don’t let that put you off; this café has the perfect study environment that I crave. Take the décor, for example: it’s colourful, fresh, modern and, most of all, quiet! (No one talking loudly on their mobile phone is always a bonus) However, I think my favourite thing about the interior is the small library on the edge of the café with the extensive collection of English books. I’m not ashamed to say that I found myself reading one of the Twilight Saga books again. I think there is still a little bit of teenage girl in all of us!
When I first arrived, I was greeted with a glass of warm water. However, I noticed the menu was in Chinese. I was offered an English menu with pictures, although I did have to request this. Even though I was the only one in the café, I still had to call over the waitress, who was sitting down with her phone, when I was ready to order. As previously mentioned, I do spend a lot of time and money in cafes, so my coffee shop Chinese doesn’t suck. However, if you lead a more interesting life than me and don’t spend excessive amounts of time in cafes then you will need to point to the pictures and say ‘Zhe ge,’ as the waitress spoke no English. I ordered a black Americano for 15RMB, a Caramel Latte for 20RMB and a Ginger Tea for 12RMB, all reasonably priced for the size of the mugs. When my drinks came I found the black coffee a little watery, but the tea was refreshing and the latte was sweet and frothy as I hoped it would be. I think the only thing missing is there was no cake selection to accompany my coffee, which I was sad about. I think we would all agree that cake and coffee go hand in hand!
Overall, I would say that this is the perfect place if you want a quiet environment with a good study atmosphere, but if you are looking for somewhere a little more social to hang out with friends, maybe you should head elsewhere.
Pros: Lovely fresh décor. Good study environment.
Cons: I enjoy a slice of cake with my coffee that isn’t sold here.
