PROS: Great décor, friendly service
CONS: No English

Nestled alongside many established bars and restaurants in the Qujiang area near the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, XiFengLie almost literally shines with potential..
The 1950s Americana décor is stunning, with bright lights glistening on the long metal bar and white interior. Photos and hand-drawn notes enliven the small area, making it immediately feel cozy and intimate. It was like drinking inside the best kind of hybrid between an old-school American diner and a hipster café. The vibe is noticeably different from most other bars because of the vibrancy. It’s a great place to meet friends and catch up or have a quiet weekend evening.

The wait staff has limited English, but they are incredibly patient and willing to take the necessary effort to understand and answer questions. I didn’t have any problems with my incredibly limited Chinese.

But even though we were the only patrons in the bar on a Friday night—which could be a blessing and a curse—the drinks took about twenty minutes to arrive. It seemed like they were tapping a new keg for every beer we ordered.

The beers were also incredibly varying in quality. When I tried a flight of six beers, a couple of the IPAs–including one that they said had peppercorn in it, but I couldn’t really taste it–were outstanding. The hops were really flavorful but didn’t lead to an overly bitter aftertaste. However, the remaining four ranged from just passable to straight-up Tsingdao. The bar also has a very large selection of bottles and cans to choose from, so anyone going with a group can just grab a Corona or Paulaner. The normal Chinese bar snacks are also available, like peanuts, spicy chips, dried squid and dried beef sticks. This isn’t the place to go for a full-on meal, but definitely a good way to start or end your night.

XiFengLie Club provides an overall pleasant experience, and if you’re in the area and looking for a new place to grab a beer, you’ll definitely want to check it out.
