For this issue of Xianease, I interviewed Adam Varjavandi from the United Kingdom. Adam is the founder of Chinaberry, a new language school in Xi’an! They are doing some pretty impressive stuff and I thought it would be great to introduce them to the community.
How long have you been in Xi’an and what do you do here?
I left Toronto to teach in China in 2007. I spent most of that time as an education director at Web Int’l English here in Xi’an. I recently partnered with Unique Performance to launch the first TESOL training program in Xi’an, one of very few such programs in all of China. We’re also running professional English and cultural training programs that are designed for business needs, and academic courses for advanced English speakers.

OK, I’ll admit it right up front. I’m an Ali groupie! Any bar Ali is playing at is my favourite bar. This guitarist from Xinjiang has to be one of the best you’ll ever hear, and if you haven’t heard him play –you’ve really missed out! He has great stage presence and his music requires audience participation. Go to an Ali concert and you’ll find yourself singing (OK yelling) along with everyone else in the room. His flying fingers make amazing music –I’m not sure it is possible to move as fast as his fingers do. Not only does he have flying fingers , but he is athletic and his flying feats at the end of a set will have you pumped as well. I caught up with Ali at the Oasis Music Network Rock Concert in GuangYin Bar in Tong Mengguo park, just outside the South Gate. He was playing along with TBOR, Oasis, ChiLun XiangPi, Shen BaiSe, Hei Sa (Black Hat), FuShi, NoName and Wu Ge Huo Qiang Shou.
