When I knew that I was going to write a review of another German restaurant, I was like, “Seriously? Again?” No offense to Germany, but when I think about German food, I’m always reminded of high blood pressure – too much meat and salt. However, my trip to the Bayern Bierhaus in southern Gaoxin changed my mind about German food.

Bayern looks pretty ordinary from the outside, but let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. Once you enter, you get a relaxed feeling from the soft lighting and wooden décor. It’s definitely a good place to spend some quality time with family or friends.

I’m not generally picky about food, but like I said earlier, I wasn’t super thrilled about German food. But guess what? I was completely wrong about this. The dinner was full of surprises. We started with pretzels that were just salty enough, and made a great combination with the German dark beer. Next was a Caesar salad that had smoked duck breast instead of chicken—a perfect balance to those tedious vegetables. Another can’t-miss appetizer is the escargot, which was fresh and surprisingly tasty.

For our main course, we had pork knuckle with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Whoever decided to put these three things together deserves a Food Oscar, because that sour cabbage goes pretty damn well with the greasy pork knuckle.

The surprises weren’t finished yet. We finished the meal with dessert, of course. Bayern has a very unique, very delicious spin on Black Forest Cake. They make theirs like tiramisu is made – ladyfingers soaked in rum – then they add all the chocolate and brandied black cherries. You’ll be in heaven!

The Bayern location in Gaoxin can be quite inconvenient for people who live downtown, but perfect for people living in the south of the city. For everyone else, there’s a location near Dayanta. Whichever one you go to, you won’t regret a single second you spend there.
