Those looking for good German food and top-notch beer should make their way over to Hackor-Pschorr Brauhaus in Gaoxin.
The Hackor-Pschorr Brauhaus is the upscale brand of Paulaner Group, a popular German beer company whose wares can be found cheaply in bars all over Xi’an. This branch is located on the first floor of the Marriott Executive Apartments and provides a taste of Germany with some eclectic twists.
As soon as you walk in, the restaurant feels like a movie set. The employees are all wearing Oktoberfest-style garb and are very friendly. It is a three-story establishment with a rustic wooden décor. There is a stage on one side that often hosts concerts and DJs and every table on the first two floors is situated to have a great view. The third floor separated and is great for hosting parties and private events. There is also an outdoor patio that stays open until 2 a.m. in the summer months.
As far as food is concerned, focus on the German fare. The menu is a hodgepodge of items ranging from Japanese-style eel to pizza to club sandwiches to more classical German cuisine. If you have children or especially unadventurous eaters, bring them here and have them eat burgers, pretzels and salad while you get the good stuff.
This is a brauhaus. If you like sausages, you should be looking for apartments nearby. The sausage platter has an incredible variety and quality that can satisfy even the pickiest bratwurst-lover. Cured meats and cheeses abound. Don’t get distracted by the other offerings–this place is about meat. The pork knuckle was unbelievably tender and comes with excellent sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.
But at the end of the day this is a restaurant created by a brewery, and the beer is absolutely excellent. They only serve three kinds of beer—all brewed in-house in these enormous copper brew kettles in the center of the restaurant—but they are all grades above what you can find in most places in the city. The lager is crisp and refreshing; the dark beer is nutty and sweet and the hefeweizen has that delicious citrus-wheat flavor. They also serve cocktails and wine.
German food is a rare delicacy in Xi’an, but Hackor-Pschorr has been dedicated to providing that good stuff since 2015. Whether it’s for a quick lunch, extravagant dinner or a few drinks in the evening Hackor-Pschorr is a solid spot to go and pretend it’s always October.
