I’m a coffee guy, plain and simple. Don’t get me wrong, as a British guy I do enjoy a ‘Cuppa tea’ every now and then, but my go to drink is definitely coffee. When wandering along the side street of Mandi plaza near the Big Goose Pagoda, I stumbled across a hidden gem: Remedy coffee & beer. This place may not be the biggest, but boy do they have a good selection of drinks. The decoration of this place is very clinical with simple colors and makes it an overall relaxing environment to be in.

Jason, a master barista and Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach, has several years of experience in the coffee industry and will brew any coffee to suit your requirements. During my visit, there were several different types of coffee beans available and Jason was very meticulous in his approach to my espresso, selecting and weighing out beans sourced from different areas. The espresso carried a unique taste with bitter notes and a slight acidic finish, and was something I certainly wouldn’t refuse had he offered me another. It is evident that Jason is very passionate about coffee and takes his job serious. He also speaks English, so communicating won’t be an issue.

The beer available in this place is generally sourced from microbreweries in the US and the art work on the cans alone make a visit to this joint worthwhile. Many of the beers are some of the more unusual / avant-garde fruity flavors such as watermelon to give only one example.

As one may expect with imported craft beers, they’ll cost more than an average Qingdao, but a couple of these brews won’t exactly break the bank. The coffee isn’t a bad price and you can expect to pay around 30 yuan for an americano, which is pretty standard for most coffee shops in and around Xian. Also, for the vegan army, I noticed a few cartons of oat milk behind the counter, so it shouldn’t be difficult for you to get a Latte without plummeting into psychological distress.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend people to check this place out when in the Big Goose Pagoda area. Quiet, simple, and overall a good place to meet friends and kick back.
