Summer has come and, though the days will be hot, the nights will be just right for a bit of al fresco fun. We last tackled this topic a couple of years ago but, due to the feverish pace of the Xi’an bar scene, that article is currently very, very wrong. So, let’s dive in for a long-overdue update and get you up on some roofs with a nice cold drink.

TRAVELLING WITH HOSTEL

Travelling With has really settled into their location next to Zhuque Gate, and now that their renovations are done it’s time to go check out the great roof deck. You might be a bit deterred by the steep and numerous stairs to get up there, and the drinks are only the normal assortment, but the vistas are totally worth it.

Mt. South Brewery Bar
南山精酿

Our reviewer David Lee had a great time here, writing that Mt. South is “trying to be everything to everybody.” With nearly twenty beers on tap and gourmet food options for dinner, it seems like they’re largely succeeding at that. You can enjoy everything on offer on their roof, which is pretty and, on just the right kind of day, you’ll be able to catch a mountain too.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by choice, perhaps you could simplify your life with a trip to Tasty House. Instead of encyclopedic menus you’ll only have a couple of options, generally along the lines of “beer and hamburger.” Both are very good, and a seat on the roof patio watching something on the projection screen sounds like a nice evening to us.

云 YUN BAR

Yun Bar will be a breath of fresh air for people who are tired of the same-old-same-old “beer and South Gate” song and dance routine. Tucked down in Xiaozhai, you’ll get a nice change of locale, and some great cocktails at affordable prices.

逢城城咖啡露台

Formerly “Roof Coffee Bar,” Roof Bar is this month’s “so, you don’t really want to drink” option. A large café menu is at your disposal, complete with pasta, sandwiches, salads, juices and more. Add to that the lushly decorated patio, and you’ve found a nice place to sun up for the afternoon.
